Welcome to First Grade! I am so happy to be your child's teacher. We are going to have a fantastic year together, learning and growing as a classroom family at Atlanta Speech School's Wardlaw School!
A Lifelong Learner
I began teaching in 1992 and served as an educator for City Schools of Decatur for 21 years. I am originally from New Jersey and moved to Atlanta after I graduated from a small liberal arts college called Marietta College in Ohio. I taught in DeKalb County Schools for my first six years, while simultaneously working on my Master's in Library Media Technology at Georgia State University. I was hired as a Library Media Specialist and Early Intervention Specialist by City Schools of Decatur in 1999.
I earned my Ed.S. in Education in 2004, and from 2007 to 2016 I served as the Instructional Technology Coordinator and Director of Instructional Media and Communications at the district level for City Schools of Decatur. The most important part of my job was teaching teachers and administrators how to best integrate the vast technology resources we had in Decatur, as well as effectively communicate the district's news and information. It was an enriching and challenging job, and I am proud of the work we accomplished over those nine years. However, I desperately missed working with children full time and in 2016 decided I to follow my heart back to the classroom. It was in my first grade classroom at Oakhurst Elementary where I found my true calling- teaching students with dyslexia. I retired from public education in May 2020, and I am absolutely thrilled and honored to be part of the Atlanta Speech School family.
Teaching is My Passion
I received my OG training at the Schenck School in Atlanta, Georgia under Rosalie Davis, Fellow of the Academy of Orton-Gillingham practitioners in 2018, and I earned the Wilson Dyslexia Practitioner Certification in March 2023. I have been an educator since 1992, and teaching students to read is my heart's passion. I have been specifically using structured literacy methods as well as the Wilson Reading System as a certified Dyslexia Practitioner, trained tutor and teacher for the past six years. Additionally, I am the mother of two sons, including a child diagnosed with ADHD, dyslexia and expressive language disorder. I understand the challenges, fears, and unique strengths of students with dyslexia.
My Family
I have two amazing sons: Zack, who is a junior at Georgia State University and a football coach for Druid Hills High School, and Zander who is a soccer-loving sophomore at Decatur High School. We love walking our Bernese Mountain Dog, MeiMei, and exploring restaurants, parks and shops in Decatur (we live in Downtown Decatur). We brought Zander home from Beijing in 2010 at the age of 2.5 and he stole our hearts with his precious smile and his enthusiastic and loving personality!
Welcome to First Grade!
I look forward to getting to know all of you! My goal as a teacher is to help students develop their own voice as learners: to light the fire of learning and guide them as they grow their Habits of Scholarship- collaboration, craftsmanship and perseverance. I believe that building a caring, inclusive classroom culture may be one of the most important pieces we do this year. Magical things can happen when teachers and students have a passion for learning, and every person who walks through the classroom door feels a sense of belonging- a purpose- as soon as they step inside.
Warmly,
Heather Borowski
